At the Car Wash - Doo Doo Do Doo

Last Saturday, I noticed that Liana’s sister, Marine, car had been beaned with something gooey on the driver’s side door. Warning her that this substance could cause extensive damage to the car and paint job – I suggested that she at least washed off the goo. As she was hard at work scrubbing her Ford Focus, Devin decided he wanted to get in on the action.

Looking every bit like one of those guys a the car wash (heh heh) and even though he was more hindrance than help this time…

I’m sure he’ll get better at it and then I’ll give HIM the two dollar tip I reserve for the car wash guys!!

Getting in a groove

I don’t know why but it seems that our kids gravitate to musical instruments – there has been many a time when Devin will sneak into the living room and start playing on Liana’s violin – but the easiest instrument to get to is Liana’s electric piano.

Devin discovered it when he was 10 months old.

Brianna discovered it at about the same time but these pictures were taken recently when she was almost 13 and a half months old.

First day of summer

It reached 90 here yesterday – what better time than to do the gardening!

Happy Father's day - explosion!

Well, just got back from Father’s day with the Gaughans. I still find it quite strange that I am a father, not so much the fact that I have children but sometimes I don’t think of being their father but being their friends. I know that sounds silly but beyond loving Devin and Brianna, I really like them and I love being with them all the time. Well mostly.

I still am stressing out about the whole going out to a restaurant thing. I want the kids to stay in one place and eat and then go home. Well, this doesn’t happen. I can handle it because I understand it but sometimes it can be stressful. The funny thing is when he is just with me and his sister, Devin is great, when you bring in Liana he gets a little active, when you bring in others he get a lot of active.

We celebrated Father’s day today at the Wyndham Hotel in Costa Mesa, right on the same man made lake that Liana and I had our wedding pictures. It was all of us – Mom, Dad - Kevin, Laura with Riley and Aidan. Dennis and Rebecca with Connor, Kylie and Keaton and us with Liana’s sister Marine and of course Devin and Brianna.

It was pretty uneventful for the most part, Devin sat and ate, Brianna sat and ate but after brunch Devin was getting a little active. Presents were opened. My Mom loves giving Kevin, Dennis and me the same present and have us open them at the same time. I must say I enjoy that – this year it was wallets and travel toiletry bags. Dennis gave Kevin and me an iPod shuttle – it was something I wanted to get and was saving up for. It was a great present that choked me up a bit. Kevin and Laura gave me a silk Hawaiian shirt and a Mr. Clean car washer – it looks like a Super Soaker squirt gun and of course Devin latched on to it and tore open the package. In the package was a bottle of cleaning liquid about the size of a small bottle of shampoo. Devin thought it was sooooo funny to thrown the bottle over a hedge (we were sitting outside), his aunt told him to get it which he ran and got. Maybe that wasn’t such a good thing to do – maybe we should have gone and got it ourselves – I am sure I might do that next time. Well, this almost four-year-old runs and takes the bottle and then gives it back to his aunt as she told him too, except he decides to throw it at her and this kid has a pretty good arm for an almost four-year-old and, not just an underhand toss but overhand throw, like a rocket. (And I must confess I taught him that because I didn’t want him to throw like a girlie man).

Okay, what happens next goes into the same category of cars meeting at an intersection, an event that could never be replicated – you see, when Devin threw the bottle at his aunt and she kinda ducked or didn’t reach for it or whatever, it went flying at the table we were all having our meal – in it’s course of reentry it hit a metal coffee creamer at just the right angle that caused it to – well, what word could I use to described the sheer force that this creamer – ah, EXPLODED! It covered Connor, who was sitting right in the path, from head to toe in white – I swear he was so surprised he didn’t move for 30 seconds and covered the window behind his with streaks of thick milk. Nothing much was said except for ‘what was that!’ by my mother. I could say it was one of those things that you could laugh about later except I, and I think everybody else, except Connor, probably wanted to lose it right there. Liana made Devin apologize and Connor squeaked out an acceptance except commented about smelling like goat cheese and needing a shower. After we all calmed down, we got together for a family picture. Overall, I really love getting together with my family but I’m thinking of some kind of harness for Devin. Ala Hannibal Lector.

I funny little post script: Liana was putting Devin to sleep tonight and he was quiet for about five minutes –he was just reaching that twilight part where you are almost asleep when he giggled a little and stopped. A few seconds latter he giggled again – then he was just plain laughing – Liana asked him why he was laughing, finally he said, “That was so funny, I threw that thing and it blow up and there is rain on the window,” and then he quietly laughed himself to sleep.
