New House - Day 2

I got a call from my father at 11am on Monday saying that the Termite exterminators needed the house open and would be there between 10 and 12. So we all (Liana, her mother, Devin, neighbor John and I) trucked down to the house. While there I staked out where I want the cable outlets and the high speed internet outlet. They soon came and we headed back home.

Later we drove by the house to see it tented. I always enjoyed see the bright colored tents surrounding a house that probably sends the neighbors diving under their houses to see if there are any sandcastle like spirals indicating subterranean termites. If I now have to go through the pain and agony and embarrassment of covering my house to indicate to the world that it is not 100%, then I want some enjoyment out of it! But nooooooooooooo, it was a bright multi-colored circus tent indicating that the bug circus was in town but a tasteful brown and beige tent that you could hardly tell was there – grrrrrrrrrr!

As Liana, Devin and I stopped to look, a look of surprise and confusion came over Devin’s face, “Daddy, utah (look at), new house, new house is, new house is,,,”, he stuttered in excitement, you could literally see the wheels cranking to try and come up with the correct word from his limited vocabulary to describe what he saw. “New house in… blanket!”

The Table Saga - Part 2

Wow! What a problem a little table can provide – now that the 42” table can’t fit into our breakfast nook we have to shrink it to a 36” but if we do that the pedestal will overwhelm the table – so we have to pick a new pedestal – a lot of effort and time seems to be spent on a table that for the most part will be important but overlooked but that’s the way these things go.

New House - Day 1

Well, yesterday, August 1st, we received the keys to our new house - which is exactly a block from our old one. If we wanted to we could probably spend all day just walking our stuff up the block - in single file - like ants - but being that I turn 44 in a few days - I think I'll hire someone to do all the heavy (and light) lifting.

My mom and dad and brother Kevin (with son, Aiden) came up to partake in the grand event, and so we walked, in single file, to the new place. I have to say that seeing the place without furniture and stuff, it sure looks... smaller. This just didn't happen to me but to my mother as well, because she already purchased a table for us for the breakfast nook which at 48" wouldn't leave much room for chairs or us sitting in them unless we all lost a lot of weight - supermodel type of weight loss. This is probably not going to happen so we have to make the table smaller.

We all went from room to room figuring out how we can get all our stuff in and how we were going to set it up. Got some ideas but we got to get a few things done before this happens. One is we gotta get it fumigated because we were sort of over run by termites – or so we are told. Two, a little painting in the bedrooms and living room. Three, cable, etc.

I checked out the California cellar we have. It has access from the inside unlike my present house which has access from the outside. Not a lot of room down there to store much but the heater and hot water heater but there is a lot of space between the foundation and the house – so I can crawl around down there to wire anything I need to. As I was searching around I saw a few rat traps – most of them already had been sprung – my flashlight caught something furry – a rat trapped in a trap. Now, it wasn’t moving, it had probably been there for a while but my mind and body were not prepared for it just then and I hurried up the stairs just like a girlie man. After a few hyperventilated breaths, I cautiously went back downstairs; this time prepared for anything and searched the rest of the cellar. No more surprises! I told my mother what I had found and she told me that I should keep it from Liana because it may freak her out – well, Liana's mother overheard the conversation and maybe she felt her daughter should know or maybe she didn’t understand and wanted some clarity, but she told Liana – and now she’s having dreams of the rats attacking us while we sleep.

Devin seems to like the place and the great acoustics it has for his voice – he has my mother’s lungs – loud! He was a little afraid of the garage – I hope it’s not a Sixth Sense sorta thing - but other than that he likes his new house. The first thing I’m going to do is work on the garage – not a big priority in the scheme of things but if I can get the garage set up to store a lot of stuff… then we’ll be money!

I must say I am a bit apprehensive about the moving especially in the small window we have but now that I’m walking around and becoming one with it, I know I’m going to be really happy here. To decompress myself from the eventful day, I abandoned my family and went to see a couple of movies – the Village and The Manchurian Candidate! To read of my opinions about these film go here!

Now I gotta figure out where to put my computer!
